Iran: Conservative press congratulates Salman Rushdie attacker

Iran’s main ultra-conservative newspaper Kaihan congratulate today the person who yesterday, on Friday, stabbed world famous British writer Salman Rushdie to death in the USauthor of The Satanic Verses, who has been the target of Iranian fatfa for over 30 years.

“Well done, courageous and conscientious man who attacked the renegade and villain Salman Rushdie,” said the newspaper, whose head was appointed by Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“Let’s kiss the hand of the one who tore the throat of the enemy of God with a knife,” the publication continued.

The assailant stabbed Rushdie in the neck and stomach in the auditorium of a cultural center in Chautauqua, in northwest New York. According to his literary agent, the author is intubated and may lose one eye.

The Iranian authorities have not yet officially commented on the assassination attempt on the 75-year-old intellectual.

Following the official line, all Iranian media branded Rushdie a “renegade”, with the exception of the reformist newspaper Etemad.

A state-owned Iranian newspaper wrote that “the devil’s throat was cut with a razor.”

“I will not cry for a writer who denounces Muslims and Islam with endless hatred and endless contempt,” tweeted Mohammad Maradi, adviser to the negotiating group on Iran’s nuclear program.

“Rushdie is a pawn of empire posing as a post-colonial writer,” he added.

“Isn’t it strange that while we are getting closer to a possible deal on the nuclear program, the US is pretending that an attack on (former White House national security adviser) Bolton was planned … ? he asks. .

Salman Rushdie provoked an outcry in parts of the Muslim world with the September 1988 publication of The Satanic Verses. The founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, issued a fatfa in 1989 calling for the assassination of the author.
