US Congress passes $434 billion climate protection and inflation control package

A week after the US Senate adopted a multibillion-dollar package of measures aimed primarily at ensuring energy security and protecting the climate, as well as fighting inflation, the US Congressional House of Representatives also passed this program. On Friday, August 12, 220 lawmakers voted in favor of the $434 billion package drawn up by Democrats, 207 against.

“This is an incredible victory for American families,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, calling the bill “a robust cost-cutting package that will stand the test of time and ensure our families thrive and our planet survive”.

Big win for Biden

The bulk of the package – about $375 billion – will be used to ensure energy security and climate protection, as well as provide various tax incentives. Another 64 billion will go to healthcare initiatives, mainly to ensure lower prices for medicines. In addition, the bill provides for stricter tax controls for companies.

The US Senate approved the bill after a lengthy debate on August 7, it was supported by 51 out of 101 people, with a decisive vote by US Vice President Kamala Harris. US President Joe Biden is expected to sign it in the coming days. Support for the package by both houses of the US Congress is considered a major victory for Biden ahead of the November 8 election. Republicans, like some Democrats, have long been strongly opposed to adopting this package.

Democrats hope that passing the law will allow them to retain a majority in Congress. Biden promised major reforms a year and a half ago when he took office, but has so far failed to implement them.
