Ukraine’s interior minister said on Thursday that Ukraine should be prepared for any scenario at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is currently under Russian control and has been hit by bombings, including to evacuate people from the area, Reuters reported.
Local Ukrainian officials and officials appointed by Russia blamed each other for a new series of explosions on Thursday at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine.
“As of today, the plant is not only in the hands of the enemy, but also in the hands of uneducated specialists who could allow a tragedy,” said Interior Minister Denys Monastyrskyi in an interview with Reuters.
“Of course, it’s hard to even imagine the scale of the tragedy that could happen if the Russians continue their actions there,” said Denys Monastyrskyi.
In recent days, Ukraine has warned of the threat of a Chernobyl-type nuclear disaster.
“For us, this means that … we have to prepare for any scenario. State emergency services, together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of the Regions, are discussing various necessary scenarios, including evacuation,” Monastyrskyi said.
