Janis Strelnieks was born on September 1, 1989 in Talsi, Latvia. An experienced defender playing at the highest level of European basketball, he took his first steps in the Latvian Ventspils in 2007, at the age of 18. In fact, that same year, he also won a bronze medal with his country’s national youth team at the EuroBasket 2007 in Spain.
He stayed in his hometown for the next 4 years until 2011 and also became a champion in 2009 after a very productive season averaging 12.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists. For the next two years, he played for the colors of the Russian Spartak from St. Petersburg, and then for the Ukrainian Budivelnik, with whom he won the national championship.
In 2014, he became a resident of Bavaria, on behalf of Bamberg, with which he filled his palmare. In particular, during his three years in Germany, Strelnieks won the same number of championships, the cup (2017) and the super cup (2015). The Latvian has been a key figure in all of these accolades, culminating in the 2016-17 season when he averaged 11 points, 2.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game while shooting 45.9% of 6.75 in Germany. and Euroleague.
For the next two years, the 1.91 million defender wore the OSFP jersey before returning to Russia and CSKA Moscow, with whom he also celebrated the VTB United League. In the “soldiers” the Latvian was a key “cog” and was an important factor, both in domestic obligations and in the European Euroleague. The next season, that is, in 2021, he moved to Zalgiris, rising, where he remained until the end of it, winning the Lithuanian Cup.
Janis Strelnieks has been playing for the Latvian national team since 2011, having played 51 matches for the national team to date, culminating in participation in the EuroBasket, in four different years (2011, 2013, 2015, 2017).
