Taiwan complains that China is preparing to invade

Her Foreign Minister Taiwan China accused China today of moving military training centers around the island to “prepare” an invasion and “change the status quo” in the Asia-Pacific region.

“China is using its high schools and military roadmap to prepare for an invasion of Taiwan,” Joseph Wu said at a press conference in Taipei. “China’s true intention is to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and the entire region,” he continued.

Beijing was looking for pretexts to move to universities, and the visit of the speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi gave him such an opportunity, the head of Taiwanese diplomacy also said.

In his opinion, the best way to counter China’s attempts to terrorize Taiwan is to demonstrate that the island is not intimidated.

He called the secondary schools around the island a flagrant violation of international law, noting that they obstruct traffic on one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.

At least 20 Chinese and Taiwanese warships remained near the median line in the strait earlier today, and some Chinese tried to cross it, an unnamed source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters news agency. The same source said that several Chinese warships continue to operate off the east coast of Taiwan.

The Chinese military will reopen secondary schools on the island today, Reuters reported.

China considers the island of about 23 million people, with its own autonomous government, a breakaway province destined to be reunited with the mainland, if necessary by force. Taiwan remained autonomous after the end of the Chinese Civil War (1949).
