For her part, the toddler’s aunt, Ella Carter, said he was off his medication at 10 am. For two hours his condition was stable until he was reduced oxygen from the ventilator.
“Then he turned blue. There is nothing worthy in watching a relative or a child die of suffocation. No family should go through what we went through, it was barbaric,” Aunt Archie said with tears in her eyes.
Archie died at 00:15 (local time) after doctors turned off his life support on Saturday morning, having been brain dead for the past several months.
Archie’s story
Little Archie was found unconscious at his home in Southend, Essex on 7 April. It is believed that he participated in some kind of online challenge.
Since then, his brain has died at the Royal London Hospital in the British capital.
The hospital doctors insisted that the humane solution would be to turn off his machines and let him die. But his parents hoped they could get a second opinion in places like Turkey and China, where experts offered to help with his case.
A legal battle ensued over whether a 12-year-old should be removed from cars, with a British court ruling in favor of the hospital. Archie’s parents also appealed to the European Court of Human Rights, which, however, found him incompetent.
The boy’s family then filed a new lawsuit, calling for Archie to be transferred from the hospital to a specialized rehabilitation center where he “could die with dignity.” And yet, their efforts did not pay off.
