Chinese warplanes and ships on Saturday, August 6, drew up the scenario for attacking the island of Taiwan as part of the exercises being carried out in the surrounding waters. This was reported by Taiwanese officials to Western news agencies.
According to Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense, 14 Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft have crossed the median line separating Taiwan’s and Chinese territorial waters in the Taiwan Strait. In response, Taiwan put its fighters on high alert.
PLA exercises in Taiwan began after Pelosi’s visit
Chinese military exercises at six locations around Taiwan began on Thursday, August 4, after the island was visited by US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The PLA’s Eastern Theater Command said the maneuvers were designed to test the Chinese army’s ability to carry out strikes against land targets and attacks from the sea. The exercise is scheduled to end on August 7th.
On August 5, AP news agency reported that after Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, the Chinese government froze major channels of communication with Washington, through which military issues were discussed, among other things. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called the move irresponsible. He also added that the PLA’s latest activity around Taiwan suggests that Beijing might reconsider its approach to the Taiwan issue in favor of a hard-hitting solution.
