His disciplinary committee UEFA punished Fenerbahçe with a one-match partial standoff (with a two-year ban) for his fans chanting the name of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the second leg against Dynamo Kyiv on 27 July.
“Vladimir Putin” chants from a section of Fenerbahce fans were recorded when Vitaliy Buyalsky gave the Ukrainians the lead in the 57th minute of the second leg of the Champions League second qualifying round, where Dynamo won 2-1 after extra time to take the lead.
This was followed by a very strong online “outrage” of the fans of the Istanbul team by fans from all over Europe, calling on UEFA to take action against the Turkish club.
The UEFA disciplinary body fined Fenerbahçe 50,000 euros and ordered the partial closure of the Sukros Saracoglu Stadium – with at least 5,000 seats – including throwing objects.
Earlier, Fenerbahce said that the chant lasted 20 seconds and was caused by the “excessive” celebration of some Kiev players after the goal.
