Russian energy giant Gazprom is burning gas on the border with Finland intended for export to the European Union, the UNIAN news agency reported on Thursday with reference to the Finnish publication Yle, according to which Moscow has literally been burning gas since the end of May, when the Russian gas company cut supplies to EU.

The burning is taking place near the “Portova” compressor station and the LNG terminal of the same name. Satellite images of the NASA fire monitoring system show that the process began on May 22, Agerpres reports.

During this period, the Gazprom company reduced gas transit to the European Union and stopped using the gas pipeline at full capacity, although the EU fully paid for deliveries.

At the end of the month, burning of Russian gas was observed at the terminal near the border with Finland. And in mid-June, a fire was noticed near the compressor station. During this period, Gazprom almost tripled gas supplies to Europe – from 167 million cubic meters of gas to 67 million cubic meters.

Gases continue to burn for several weeks in extremely large volumes, and huge flames can be seen even from the territory of Finland, Unian notes with reference to Yle publication.

On Wednesday, Russia said it could not receive a Canadian-repaired Siemens turbine that is considered essential to the operation of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which supplies Russian gas to Europe, because of sanctions. For such reasons, the Russian Federation is trying to get the EU to cancel the restrictions introduced after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, UNIAN comments.
