Kefalonia: The mystery of the death of a 54-year-old diver – He was the son of the shepherd Imia.

A veil of mystery surrounds the death of a 54-year-old diver who died yesterday at Kefalonia while fishing.

Authorities are awaiting autopsy results to determine the man’s cause of death.

A 54-year-old fisherman from Kalymnos went to Kefalonia on his boat. There he fished using the “hookah” method, i.e. a tube that supplied it with air, from the surface with a compressor. In fact, he was thought to be a very skilled fisherman.

While fishing on Wednesday, the 54-year-old diver’s young assistant saw him swimming in a semi-sad condition and reported this to the Kefalonia Coast Guard.

A Coast Guard ship arrived at the scene, picked up the 54-year-old man, and took him to the port of Lixouri, where he was picked up by an ambulance. In “Matsavinateo”, where he was buried, his death was confirmed.

Son of the “shepherd Imiya”

According to the information, the unfortunate man’s name was Yiannis Veziropoulos, and he was the fifth of six children of Antonis Veziropoulos, known as the “shepherd of Imia”. Mr. Antonis kept goats on the two islands for over 20 years, which he visited constantly for as long as his age allowed.

In an expert opinion carried out by the Kefalonia Port Authority, it was found that the mechanism, that is, the compressor and the hose, work without problems. Instead, the tube was intact. This disproves the theory that a boat passed by and hit him.

A Coast Guard diver who dived to the place where an experienced 54-year-old man was fishing, who was at a depth of 35 meters, did not find anything remarkable.

Regarding the forensic examination, medical examiner Andreas Gotzis completed the autopsy on Thursday morning (04/08) without any significant results. “Typical drowning results,” he told ERT.

Coast Guard announcement

“Today at noon, the second crew member of the E / PA / K vessel informed the Kefalonia port administration about the discovery of a 54-year-old local resident who was engaged in underwater fishing in a semi-conscious state. in the sea area “GEROGOMPOS” Palliki, Kefalonia.

An LS-EL.AKT patrol boat immediately arrived in the area to provide assistance, which first took the aforementioned man to the port of Lixouri, and then he was transported by an EKAB ambulance to the general hospital “MATZAVINATEIO” Lixouri, Kefalonia, where his death was confirmed .

The Kefalonia Port Authority ordered an autopsy.
