UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced on Wednesday that the organization is preparing an investigative mission to find out the “truth” about the explosions that took place last week at the Olenivka prison in the territory controlled by Russian forces in eastern Ukraine, where dozens of convicted Ukrainian prisoners of war were killed.
In this way, the UN responds to the appeal of both camps, which accuse each other of the attack on this prison, as a result of which at least 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war were killed, at least 70 more were injured, among them the soldiers of the “Azov” battalion, who surrendered in Mariupol, it is reported AFP and EFE agencies quoted by Agerpres.
While Russia claims that the attack on the prison was carried out by the HIMARS rocket launcher system used by the Ukrainian army, which received such weapons from the United States, Ukraine claims that the prison was attacked by mercenaries of the private Russian company “Wagner”.

“The basic terms of this fact-finding mission are being prepared,” Guterres said, expressing hope that he would be able to reach an agreement on those terms between Ukraine and Russia.
“We hope to get all means of access from both sides and get the necessary data to establish the truth about what happened,” explained the UN Secretary General, saying that the organization is now looking for relevant, “independent and competent” persons. ., which will be part of the mission.
But, Guterres reminded, whatever the conclusions of this mission, the UN does not have the authority to conduct “criminal investigations”.
