He specified that “this is a milestone that Mr. Ginea has reached by the end of the year, from the point of view of the pension law.”

“In the field of special pensions at the moment, I think we all agreed that it is almost incomprehensible how to have a higher pension than you had in the activity (…) We will definitely come with very high taxation. We have to discuss the rest and make a decision in the coalition,” said the SDP leader.

Regarding military pensions, Marche Čolaku said: “From my point of view, these are professional pensions, not special pensions.” “I saw the same thing at the Ministry of Internal Affairs. From my point of view (..), and I didn’t have this at the moment, these are labor pensions, not special pensions (…) We will see, and depending on the decisions of the KRS, what solution we will find in order to reach the necessary milestone by Mr. Guinea,” the PSD president added.

The PSD leader’s statements come in the context of Romania having to draft a new pension law this year, a commitment made through the National Recovery and Resilience Programme.

In addition, the Constitutional Court of Romania is analyzing appeals regarding the unconstitutionality of the law that abolished the special pensions of parliamentarians.

In addition, the issue of special pensions is extremely sensitive in Romanian society and was used by all political parties during election campaigns. Parliament passed several bills to abolish certain occupational categories that have special pensions, but they did not enter into force because they were challenged and rejected by the Constitutional Court.
