Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that he wants to take “immediate measures” to ban the broadcast of Qatar’s Al Jazeera channel in Israel, prompting concerns from the United States and the EU, AFP reports.
“Terrorist channel Al Jazeera will no longer broadcast from Israel. I intend to act immediately (…) to shut down the channel,” Netanyahu said on the X social network.
His comments came shortly after the Knesset – Israel’s parliament – voted on Monday in favor of a law banning the broadcast in Israel of foreign media that threaten the security of the state, a law aimed at the Qatar channel.
After the White House called the possible ban “worrying,” the European Union on Tuesday expressed “concern” about the bill’s passage.
The bill, which was approved in an accelerated manner by a large majority of deputies (70 votes in favor, 10 against), gives the prime minister the power to ban the broadcast of content by the relevant channel, as well as to close its offices in Israel.
Qatar’s Al Jazeera on Monday condemned Israel’s possible broadcast ban, calling Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s comments a “dangerous and ridiculous lie.”
Al Jazeera condemned the “frenzied campaign” launched by Netanyahu, accusing it of “damaging Israel’s security” and “actively participating in the October 7 attack,” the channel said in a statement. “The Al Jazeera network condemns these claims as dangerous and senseless lies,” the television statement said.
