Kharkiv has become the object of increasingly persistent attacks by Moscow, and the latest strikes have destroyed most of the city’s power grid, the mayor of the city, Ihor Tereyov, admitted, Kyiv Independent reports.
This eastern Ukrainian city has been on the frontline of Russian attacks since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022, and has seen an increase in strikes in recent weeks.
According to Terekhov, as a result of the terrorist attacks in the second largest city of Ukraine, the power station and all substations were destroyed.
When asked about the reasons for the intensification of strikes, the mayor replied that he did not know what Russia’s plan was.
“The private (energy) infrastructure was also destroyed. Russia wants to intimidate us, but it is impossible,” the mayor said in an interview with Liga.net.
However, the mayor admitted that the current situation in the city is “very difficult”. According to him, the humanitarian aid centers in the city, which are also called “Points of Disobedience”, work around the clock.
“We have survived difficult times and we will also survive these times,” Terekhov also said.
On March 29, after a large-scale shelling, the state energy company “Centrenergo” announced the destruction by Russian troops of the Zmiivskaya thermal power plant in the Kharkiv region.
Other recent attacks in Kharkiv include an attack on March 30, in which a cruise missile wounded one person, and an attack on March 27, in which a cruise missile killed a civilian and injured at least 19 others, including four children.
