On Sunday, negotiations on a truce between Israel and Hamas will resume in Cairo. This is the latest attempt to rest after almost six months of war in the Gaza Strip, the Egyptian channel Al Qahera News TV announced on Saturday, citing a security source, citing News.ro.

An Israeli official told Reuters that Israel would send a delegation to Cairo on Sunday.

Instead, a Hamas official said the group would first await the results of negotiations with Israel from mediators in Cairo.

The warring parties stepped up talks brokered by Qatar and Egypt for a six-week halt to the Israeli offensive in exchange for the proposed release of 40 of the 130 hostages still being held by Palestinian militants in Gaza.

Hamas tried to get from any agreement a cessation of fighting and the withdrawal of Israeli forces. Israel ruled out that option, saying it would eventually resume efforts to dismantle Hamas’ administrative and military capabilities.

Hamas also wants hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who fled Gaza City and neighboring areas to the south during the first phase of the war to be allowed to return to the north. An Israeli official said his country was open to discussions about allowing only “some” of the displaced to return.

More than 32,000 Palestinians have been killed during the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip since October 7, according to the territory’s health authorities.
