In an interview published by the Washington Post on Friday, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that if Ukraine does not receive the promised US military aid, blocked by disputes in Congress, its forces will be forced to withdraw “in small steps”, according to Reuters.
“If there is no support from the US, that means we have no air defense, we have no Patriot missiles, we have no electronic warfare, we have no 155mm artillery shells,” Zelensky told the Washington Post.
“That means we’re going to go back, we’re going to go away, step by step, small steps,” he said. “We’re trying to find a way not to retire.”
The lack of ammunition, he said, means that “you have to settle for less. as? Of course, come back. Make the front line shorter. If it breaks, the Russians could reach big cities.”
Democratic President Joe Biden urged the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives to approve the military and financial aid package, but House Speaker Mike Johnson held off for months, citing domestic priorities.
In a phone call Thursday, Zelensky told Johnson that approval of the package was vital.
Last month, Russian troops captured the eastern town of Avdiyivka and have made small gains since then, but the front line has changed little in recent months.
In an interview, the Ukrainian president noted that Ukraine compensates for the lack of missiles with weapons and air defense systems produced in the country, “but this is not enough.”
After more than two years of war, Russia has stepped up attacks on energy and other infrastructure in recent weeks.
Ukrainian forces have been unable to advance, and Zelenskyi has said that Kyiv plans to continue attacking targets in Russia, including oil refineries.
According to him, Washington’s reaction to the wave of Ukrainian attacks was not “positive”, but Kyiv uses its own drones.
“We used our drones. Nobody can tell us you can’t,” he told the paper. “If there’s no air defense to protect our energy system and the Russians attack it, my question is why can’t we hit them back? “, – he said.
“Their society must learn to live without gasoline, without diesel, without electricity. When Russia stops these measures, we will stop too,” concluded the President of Ukraine.
