As Reuters reports, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi fired the secretary of the National Security Council of Ukraine on Tuesday and replaced him with the head of foreign intelligence.

No reason was given for the changes in a series of executive orders posted on the president’s website more than two years after the full-scale Russian invasion.

Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of the National Security Council, has held the post since October 2019, just a few months after Zelensky took office.

Speaking later in his nightly video speech, Zelensky said Danilov had been transferred to new duties, details to be released later.

He did not name the reason for Danilov’s dismissal, but noted that he expects “strengthening of the strategic capabilities of our state to predict and influence the processes on which our national security depends.”

“The strengthening of Ukraine and the renewal of our state system in all areas will continue,” he said

Zelensky appointed 51-year-old Oleksandr Lytvynenko, the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service, who is hardly a public figure, as the head of the council.

In his speech, Zelensky noted that his chosen one will combine the experience of the head of intelligence with the security and defense tasks facing Ukraine.
