One of Russia’s leading broadcasters, NTV, broadcast a fake video using audio generated by artificial intelligence in an attempt to blame Ukraine for the bloody attack in Moscow, the BBC reported.

In the video, which was widely distributed, the chief security officer of Ukraine, Oleksiy Danilov, says: “It’s fun in Moscow today. I think it’s a lot of fun. I would like to think that we will organize such entertainment for them more often.”

BBC Verify identified the video as a composite of two interviews published last week. According to the expert, Danilov’s voice was probably generated using AI technology.

Two interviews that were used to create the fake video are available on YouTube: one dated March 19, in which Danilov is a guest, and the second, dated March 16, in which the head of Ukraine’s special services Kyrylo Budanov appears.

The fake NTV video shows the presenters interviewing Budanov dressed in exactly the same clothes, with an identical background behind them.

Danilov’s quote, which appears in the NTV video, cannot be heard in the original March 16 interview, which likely means the audio was created by AI.

Sam Gregory, an expert on artificial intelligence content, told BBC Verify that the video broadcast by NTV was likely a “deepfake” and Danilov’s voice in it turned out to be “a deepfake voice clone”.
