The upper legislative chamber, the Bundesrat, decided to allow the bill to pass in session on Friday after it was approved by the Bundestag last month.

The new law allows adults to possess up to 25 grams of cannabis for personal use in public. It will also be allowed to grow three cannabis plants in your own home and store up to 50 grams for personal use at home.

The use of marijuana in public places will be prohibited in schools, sports centers and within 100 meters of them.

The project did not need formal approval by the Bundesrat, but this chamber could invite a mediation commission and drag out the process. Despite several critical voices, there was no majority on Friday in favor of sending the law to the mediation commission.

To prevent a vote against the project in the Bundesrat, the German government promised to retroactively change some provisions.
