
Brazil’s Dani Alves, a former Barcelona soccer player, can be released from prison on bail of 1 million euros after serving about a quarter of a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence for rape, a Barcelona court ruled on Wednesday, Reuters reported.

Accused of raping a 23-year-old woman in a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022, Dani Alves (40 years old) has been in pretrial detention since January 20, 2023. The Brazilian was sentenced on February 22, 2024 to four and a half years in prison and to pay the victim 150,000 euros.
Among the conditions of Alves’ release is the relinquishment of his Brazilian and Spanish passports so that he cannot leave Spain, as well as the obligation to appear in court every week.
On Tuesday morning, Alves spoke via video conference from Brians 2 prison, where he is serving his sentence: “I believe in justice, I’m not going to run away.”
The court also imposed a restraining order, barring Alves from approaching the victim.
The decision, which was not unanimous due to one of the judges voting against it, can still be appealed.
Dani Alves is one of the most successful footballers in history. He won 23 trophies with FC Barcelona, where he played from 2008 to 2016.
