Russian submarine great depth The nuclear-powered AS-31, known by the nickname Losarik, will be tested in June or July after several years of repairs, the state-run TASS news agency said on Wednesday, citing an unnamed military source, Reuters reported.
“The repair of “Losharyk” is almost completed,” said a military source close to the case.
“After completing the remaining work, it is planned to go for testing in June-July this year,” the source added.
The vessel, which was launched in 2003 and is one of the most secretive submarines in the Russian Navy, has been undergoing repairs since 2019, when a fire on board killed 14 sailors.
After the accident, the Russian Ministry of Defense admitted that the submarine was nuclear, saying that the “nuclear elements” were completely insulated from fire.
The TASS source said that after the repair, the ship will retain the ability to dive to a depth of up to 6,000 meters.
The Russian press agency wrote last year that the submarine’s titanium hull, which provides its special diving capabilities, was not damaged.
Since launching the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, President Vladimir Putin has made strengthening the country’s military capabilities a priority, saying Russia will continue to modernize its nuclear forces and maintain a high level of combat readiness.
