Donald Trump on Monday spoke about “cutting” social benefits, a statement that was immediately criticized by his rival from the Democratic Party, Joe Biden, according to AFP.
The former Republican president, a candidate for the November elections, gave an interview on CNBC about his plans for long-term funding of the main American social systems: Medicare (health insurance for the elderly), Social Security (insurance for old age) and Medicaid (health insurance for the most disadvantaged).
“There are many cuts that are possible,” the 77-year-old tycoon said.
“I will never allow this to happen,” replied the US president, who was campaigning in the northern state of New Hampshire.
“Instead of cutting old-age insurance and health insurance, I will strengthen it and make sure the richest pay their fair share of taxes,” he added.
If Donald Trump is elected, “he’s going to try to undo everything we’ve done so far,” said the 81-year-old Democrat, who praised his own efforts to lower sometimes exorbitant drug prices.
The Democrat, who released a manifesto-like budget proposal on Monday, wants to finance his projects by taxing multinationals and the richest people.
The former president regularly promises to lower taxes and increase taxation of imported goods.
The campaign between the two politicians, who, despite a big surprise, will be the two candidates in the presidential election in November, is now in full swing, and the economy is clearly the main issue.
