PSD and PNL leaders discuss joint candidates for the June 9 European Parliament elections at a coalition meeting on Monday. Convergent political sources have confirmed to HotNews.ro that the head of the European Commission’s representation in Romania, Ramona Kyriac, is the favorite for the first place in the list of two parties in the European Parliament. Instead, the leaders of the Coalition cannot decide on a single candidate for the Capital.
According to quoted sources, negotiations in the Coalition are nearing completion, and most of the candidates for the European Parliament for the relevant seats have been determined.
The latest information shows that the Social Democrats and Liberals are betting on the 17 seats eligible for the European Parliament elections on June 9, plus two more seats that could be won in a redistribution depending on the percentage obtained by the electoral alliance. Thus, of the 19 mandates that the coalition considers acceptable, the PSD claims 10 candidates plus one for redistribution, and the PNL – 7 plus one for redistribution.
- Tensions in the coalition: PSD-PNL negotiations on the European Parliament have reached an impasse due to the fact that they did not find places for Dan Voiculescu’s people / Three names that PUSL wants to add to the list
According to the latest discussions, the list of the coalition in the elections to the European Parliament should be opened by an apolitical person, and according to the sources of HotNews.ro, the chosen person is Ramona Kyriak.
Another problem within the coalition is the presence of the people proposed by PUSL (Dana Voiculescu’s party) in the appropriate places. “Maria Grapini will run for one of the corresponding seats in the PSD, and Sabina Yosub for the corresponding seat that will be given to the PNL,” the quoted sources said.
Among the new names that are proposed to run for the European Parliament elections for the corresponding seat are PNL’s Adina Valyan, Alina Gorgiu, and PSD’s Vasile Dinka and Simon Bucur Oprescu.
Similarly, Minister of Health Alexandru Rafila and Minister of Culture Raluka Tsurkan will not participate in the competition for the European Parliament. Former energy minister Virgil Popescu and MEP Dan Nika want to get a suitable seat on the coalition’s joint list, but their candidacy lacks political support.

The PSD-PNL candidate for the capital city hall is a hot potato in the coalition
The leaders of the SDP and the NLP have not identified a candidate for the post of mayor of the capital. The nomination of a candidate for the second political position in the state and with visibility at the national level has become a hot potato for social democrats and liberals.
According to the agreement in the Coalition, after the consolidation of local and parliamentary elections, PSD and PNL will support a common candidate for the position of mayor of the capital.
At the first stage, the coalition leaders agreed in principle on a joint candidate in the person of Sebastian Burduzhi, but the results of the expected polls may change the option of the Social Democrats and Liberals.
Social democrats and liberals talked behind closed doors about supporting a joint independent candidate. Sources shared names such as Dan Shuku (Mobexpert), Dragos Anastasiu (Eurolines), Dan Ostahiye (Altex) or Sorin Kirstou (head of the university hospital).

In addition, a series of sociological surveys were commissioned and various names were tested. PNL President Nicolae Chuke announced a day ago that a decision on a joint candidate for the post of mayor of the capital will be made based on the results of polls conducted separately by PSD and PNL and is expected on Monday.
- “We failed to nominate one or another candidate (ed. for the capital’s mayor’s office), because we agreed together to find out who is the most suitable. At the moment, the polls are coming to an end. We interviewed Sebastian Bourduy and Ionuc Lupesca. The PSD knows for sure that they have nominated Ms. Gabriela Firea and I think the mayor of sector 4 (ed. Daniel Beluce),” Nicolae Chuke said in a show on Prima TV.
It should be noted that in the last survey, conducted by the order of the mayor of the capital Nikushor Dan, the liberal Sebastian Burduja has 16%, Christian Popescu Piedone – 40.4% and Nikushor Dan – 39.3%.
It should be noted that Gabriel Firea was not tested in this survey conducted by Verifield on a sample of 900 people.
- Piedone on the candidacy of Gabriela Firea in Bucharest: With all due respect, I cannot support her because any horse becomes a bull
Another poll conducted by CURS between 9 and 23 February 2024 shows that 36% of Bucharest residents would vote for Nikusor Dan (independent supported by USR-PMP-Forţa Dreptei), 33% would vote for Gabriela Firea (PSD) and 8% with Sebastien Burduja.
In addition, another CURS poll in September 2023, which tested Daniel Beluce, showed that the mayor from sector 4 received 39% trust, ahead of him with 38% and Cristian Popescu-Piedone with the same score.
