At the 2024 Two-Wheeled Show in Lyon, electric motorcycles and scooters tried to compete with the monstrous BMW, Ducati, Yamaha, KTM or Harley-Davidson high volume.
However, a breath of innovation crept into the exhibition aisles, notably from the booth of Livewire, a brand associated with Harley-Davidson, and American manufacturer Zero Motorcycles, two manufacturers of electric motorcycles.
Two-wheeled Peugeot “Made in France”
Then there was also Peugeot Motorcycles, which presented a concept reminiscent of the late sixties with the Peugeot SPx, a French two-wheeler that should find a place in the sun among the landscape of urban electric vehicles. The Peugeot SPx, a concept between a scooter and a motorcycle, draws inspiration from the iconic Peugeot 103 SP of the 1970s. This choice encourages a return to basics, recalling a time when individual mobility was synonymous with freedom.
Like Renault’s resurrection of the R5 E-Tech, this nostalgic return promises a warm welcome among two-wheelers and ‘Made in France’ enthusiasts. Really, this model will be built at the Beaulieu factory in Duba, a historic Peugeot Motorcycles factory. It will also usher in a whole series of electric two-wheelers from Peugeot. The first model will appear on our roads by the end of 2025. One would think that, like the BMW CE-02, future electric two-wheelers from Peugeot would be made in India, especially after the brand’s takeover. by the German fund Mutares and the Indian giant Mahindra.
Personalization as a watchword
Aesthetically, SPx skillfully combines the codes of the past with a touch of modernity. The nods to the 103 SP can be found in the details, while modern elements such as the light signature or the patterns integrated into the taillights add a touch of freshness. The aluminum monocoque chassis and recycled materials demonstrate Peugeot’s commitment to sustainability, while its weight of around 80kg should make it an extremely maneuverable two-wheeler around town.
The concept is equipped with disc brakes with ABS and belt transmission. Provided in various categories, namely in the equivalence of 50 cm3125 cm3 and 125 cm3 “+” (i.e. slightly sportier) it will offer performance adapted to all needs, with a range of up to 100km for the high-end dual-battery version, according to our estimatesPeugeot has not announced official data on this matter.
The emphasis is on personalization and accessibility. In addition to aesthetics, the SPx will offer technical customization options such as additional footpegs, elements around the fairing, a two-seat saddle, an additional battery located between the rider’s legs, or even some additional aesthetic elements.
Also good news for users who live in the city and don’t have a charger in the garage or on the go, the batteries will be removable and can be taken home to charge from a regular outlet.
