The Peugeot 405 is (finally) retiring! Auto Plus news in your smartphone

There are cars that are quickly forgotten, while others, on the contrary, stay here for a long time. And here is one of them.

Great success for Peugeot 405

This is the Peugeot 405, which was officially introduced in 1987. It was supposed to be the successor to the Peugeot 305, but it went far beyond this simple transition. And it is not for nothing that its elegant design, signed by Pininfarina, has given it special popularity sporty and sophisticated look. The 405 shared a platform with the Citroën BX, but unlike the latter did not have hydropneumatic suspension, except for the 4×4 version on the rear axle. 405 won the hearts of motorists all over the world. In Europe, it was sold in sedan and station wagon versions, with front- or all-wheel drive. But his story did not end there. It left the French and European showrooms in 1996, giving way to the Peugeot 406. However, like many of its French compatriots, it continued its journey to other countries, mostly developing countries, and for very long decades.

Well-deserved retirement for Peugeot 405

Indeed, it was in Iran that the Peugeot 405 found a second life. Since 1999, the local manufacturer Iran Khodro has taken the helm and given it new names: RD, Persia, Safir, Pars, Soren, Dina… So many variations for a model that was able to adapt to local characteristics. Even the pickup segment was not forgotten with Arisun due to the lack of a station wagon. But now, in 2024, the company has decided to finally stop production of the Peugeot 405. This is due to the country’s new safety and pollution control standards, which have made it too expensive to maintain. Modifying this grandmother in Sochaux to integrate new technologies would be a delicate matter. At this time, there were no ideas for its replacement. The Peugeot 405 will forever remain in the history of the automotive industry, with around 2.5 million units sold worldwide. In 1988, it was even recognized as the car of the year in Europe.

So it’s a turning page for this legendary car, which is finally saying goodbye.
