Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova draws NATO’s attention to the fact that “it makes no sense to deny” sending alliance soldiers to Ukraine, News.ro reports with reference to the Russian news agency TASS.
“There is no point in continuing to deny,” Zakharova commented to the Russian newspaper “Izvestia” on the statement of Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski.
The Polish minister said on Saturday during a conference dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Poland’s accession to NATO that there are already NATO troops in Ukraine. At the same time, Sikorskyi did not specify which soldiers and which countries they are talking about.
“Soldiers from some NATO countries are already in Ukraine. And I would like to thank the ambassadors of those countries who took such a risk. (…) Unlike some European politicians, I will not say which countries we are talking about,” said Sikorsky.
At the same time, he agreed with French President Emmanuel Macron’s statement about the possibility of NATO troops entering Ukraine. “I agree with this initiative because, in my opinion, it has good intentions. This means that the Russian president should think about what our next step will be,” Sikorsky said, according to NewsMaker.
Last month, French President Emmanuel Macron said that at a meeting in Paris, where representatives of about 20 Western countries discussed the continuation of support for Ukraine in the conflict with Russia, there was talk of the possible sending of Western troops to Ukraine. According to him, the participants did not reach a consensus on this issue, but such a scenario cannot be ruled out in the future. After the conference, representatives of the majority of the participating countries stated that they have no intention of sending troops into Ukraine, and even more so oppose their participation in military operations against Russia.
This week, on Tuesday, Emmanuel Macron continued to defend his position and asked allies at a meeting in the Czech Republic “not to be cowards”, after which on Thursday he repeated his statements about the introduction of troops to the leaders of the French parties, assessing that “there are no borders” and “red line” in support of Ukraine by France.
However, on Friday, Paris qualified these statements with the voice of the Minister of Defense, who said that it was not about sending combat units, but, for example, groups to assist in demining and training of the Ukrainian military.
Some analysts interpreted the French president’s statements as part of a strategy to discourage the opponent, known as “strategic ambiguity.”
