German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius asked on Friday to immediately stop discussions about the possible sending of foreign troops to Ukraine to support that country in the war with Russia, the idea of which was launched by French President Emmanuel Macron.
“No one really wants to have troops in Ukraine. There is an ongoing debate on this topic, so we have to stop it for the moment,” German Minister Boris Pistorius said in Helsinki during a joint press conference with his Finnish counterpart Antti Hakkanen, reports EFE agency, quoted by Agerpres.
Boris Pistorius acknowledged that discussions between European countries and NATO members are necessary, but he estimated that the focus now should be on finding the best way to support Ukraine, given that its allies are unable to keep up with the needs of the Ukrainian army.
“We have a problem with production capacity, especially with ammunition, with air defense systems, with missiles, and we must do everything possible in the world to get all possible materials to support Ukraine as much as possible. This is our main goal and our challenge,” explained the German minister.
Regarding the Berlin government’s refusal to supply Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles, despite the insistence of Kyiv and some European states, Boris Pistorius emphasized that this type of weapon “will not decide the course of the war.”
“The chancellor (German Olaf Scholz) has explained several times that there is a clear line that we will never cross, that is to be participants, to be part of the war, and that is the reason why the Taurus missiles have not been delivered until now. of Ukraine, said the German Defense Minister.
Scholz argued for his refusal to provide Ukraine with Taurus surface-to-air missiles, which have a range of more than 500 kilometers and with which the Ukrainian army can hit targets far behind Russian lines, by the fact that programming the operation of these missiles to hit targets may require the participation of the German military, trained control them, just as the British and French militaries do with the Storm Shadow/Scalp missiles delivered to Kyiv.
At the press conference held on Friday in Helsinki, the Minister of Defense of Germany wanted to remind that Germany ranks second in the world in the hierarchy of countries that provided military aid to Ukraine.
