Soon the end of screens in our cars? Auto Plus news in your smartphone

We know that driving is not a trivial activity, on the contrary, and unfortunately, accidents can happen. But it is possible to reduce the risks.

In particular, the Road Traffic Rules were created for this, and why manufacturers should pay attention to the design of their cars. The goal? Make them comfortable to drive and safe for passengers. However, they also need to modernize to please customers, and that includes developing touchscreens. However, in reality they are far from unanimous. Indeed, sometimes it can be tedious to manipulate several screens to adjust the heat or simply direct the air. Besides being annoying, this practice makes drivers qtake your eyes off the road, leading to attention and safety issues. Matthew Avery, director of strategy and development at Euro NCAP, is aware of this problem. He wants that to change, explaining that “the overuse of touchscreens is an industry-wide problem, with nearly all automakers moving key controls to central touchscreens, forcing drivers to lose their way.”

More screens in our cars?

It also highlights that “new Euro NCAP tests scheduled for 2026 will encourage manufacturers to use separate physical controls for essential functions in an intuitive way, thereby limiting time spent off the road and contributing to safer driving”. But will this be the end of screens in our cars? Not necessarily, especially since there definitely won’t be any no legal obligations meet EuroNCAP requirements. However, the organization integrates this parameter into its rating system, even if it does not specify the orders to which this indicator applies. It is likely to affect the headlights, hazard warning lights or eCall controls. These functions may abandon the touch screen and no longer be linked to the center screen. Very good news, which should make driving safer by avoiding the need to turn your head, for example to activate the hazard warning lights.

It remains to be seen which brands will agree to revise their interiors to comply with these new rules in the future.
