Around 2,000 people gathered in the center of Warsaw to honor the memory of 25-year-old Belarusian Liza, raped and murdered, and all the women who suffered violence.

The “Her Name Was Liza” protest took place on the evening of Wednesday, March 6, in the center of Warsaw, where on the evening of February 25, 25-year-old Belarusian Liza was raped and killed. The demonstration was initiated by representatives of the Polish, Belarusian and Ukrainian women’s movements.

“We want her name to be known, remembered: her name was Liza, she was 25 years old, she was a young woman who wanted to live,” one of the organizers of the action, Belarusian activist Nasta Bazar, told DW. . According to her, the march has two messages: every woman should know that there will always be women who will believe in her and support her, and every man should think about what he can do to end violence.

In memory of Lisa and other victims of violence, Polish-Belarusian activist Jana Szostak held a “minute of screams”. “We cannot remain indifferent. A terrible thing happened in the center of Europe – murder, violence. I just imagined what I would want if I were in Lisa’s place, if I died. I would like everyone else not to be indifferent,” says Shostak.

“Men must understand that violence is unacceptable. Unfortunately, there is a lot of domestic violence against women. We need to achieve equal rights for women, we need to ensure that women feel safe. This is the responsibility of the entire society”, he stated. Belarusian opposition politician Pavel Latushko.

Belarusian Lisa was raped on the night of February 25 in the center of Warsaw. The rapist also tried to strangle her, the girl was found unconscious. On March 1, she died in hospital without regaining consciousness. A 23-year-old Warsaw resident is suspected of the crime and is in custody.

After Elizabeth’s rape and death, discussions began in Poland about increasing penalties for such crimes. And Belarusians and Belarusian women supported the #hopitsgvaltsіts (stop raping) flash mob – they publish on social media their stories about sexual violence and posts about what can be done to reduce such cases.
