The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, says that Russia cannot invade her country because it would have to go through Ukraine first, but it is doing everything possible to destabilize the country.
“Moscow has no way to reach the Republic of Moldova, firstly, because Ukraine is our shield and Ukraine resists and will resist, secondly, because the Republic of Moldova has strong friends and because the Republic of Moldova has decided to be on sides of the free world. What does Moscow want to do? We understand everything. Moscow wants to destabilize the situation in the Republic of Moldova. Moscow wants to scare the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, especially since this year we may have a referendum, at least this is my proposal, and I hope that the parliament in Chisinau will support it, to hold a referendum on the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union. In this context, it is obvious that the more steps we take towards the European Union, the more determined the Russian Federation creates obstacles for us, intimidates, frightens our citizens,” Maya Sandu told Digi 24.
The President of the Republic of Moldova says that Moscow is trying to destabilize the country, especially through computer warfare or buying politicians and votes, as happened in the last elections. “The Kremlin has no opportunity to teach us lessons in democracy.”
When asked if she is not afraid for her life, Maia Sandu said that everyone in the Republic of Moldova is doing everything necessary for the country.
Regarding the challenges in Transnistria, she says that local leaders only wanted more money, and Moscow does not have much room for maneuver and uses such events only for destabilization.
A call to support Ukraine
Sandu repeated the call to increase support for Ukraine so that it can win this war and avoid further loss of life.
“The stakes are high for everyone because when a country – in this case the Russian Federation – dares to attack another independent, sovereign country like Ukraine, and if that aggression is not stopped, and if a very clear message is not sent. message that such actions on the part of the Russian Federation are unacceptable, then we risk seeing similar actions on the part of other countries in different regions of the world. So, this war is not only about independence, sovereignty, about the violation of internationally recognized borders of Ukraine. It is about the international system, under which we have all subscribed and according to which the borders of all states, regardless of their size, must be respected,” Maya Sandu said, according to News.ro.
She added that it is very important for Ukraine to win this war.
“That’s why it’s very important that Ukraine wins this war, and that’s why it’s very important that everyone understands and supports Ukraine, not just the free world. Therefore, we are not only talking about democratic countries. All countries that want their borders to be respected should be interested in Ukraine winning this war,” said the President of the Republic of Moldova.
1 million citizens of Moldova have Romanian passports
Although he said he did not have exact numbers, Sandu said more than 1 million Moldovan citizens also hold a Romanian passport, “and that says a lot.”
