Palm Cove beach in the northeast of Australia is often visited by crocodiles and tropical cyclones, but this did not prevent it from being named the most beautiful beach in the world by the specialized magazine Condé Nast Traveler, informs AFP and Agerpres.

Its two kilometers of white sand and a backdrop of rows of palm trees allowed it to win the title against competitors such as Honopu Beach in Kauai (Island of Hawaii), Ora in Indonesia and Dune du Pila in France.

However, Palm Cove Beach is located in a crocodile-infested region, and Tropical Cyclone Jasper damaged its restaurants and luxury hotels late last year.

But local mayor Terry James believes it deserves its new title because of its natural beauty, particularly thanks to the “luxurious melaleuca” – an Australian plant also known as the “tea tree”.

“Having Palm Cove recognized as the number one beach in the world by a well-known magazine and website only confirms what the locals already knew about Palm Cove,” added Terry James.

A beach in Scotland, an unexpected appearance in the rating

The second place in this rating, compiled by Condé Nast Traveler magazine, is occupied by Honopu Beach on the island of Kauai (Hawaii Islands), and Brecon Beach on the Isle of Yell in the Shetland Archipelago (Scotland) completes the podium.

Numerous other Australian beaches appear on the list compiled by the American magazine, including Wategos Beach near Byron Bay, Mona Vale Beach on the northern outskirts of Sydney and Noosa Beach in Queensland.
