Electric cars, often touted as environmentally friendly vehicles, are actually not as environmentally friendly as you think. Indeed, several studies have investigated carbon footprint of electric vehicles, from their production to use, and found numerous sources of pollution.

Although they do not produce exhaust gases during use, the environmental impact of the production of batteries, metals used in the construction of vehicles, particulate emissions from brakes or tire wear is widely debated. However, another often overlooked source of pollution is tarnishing the environmental image of electric vehicles: Windshield washer fluid!

Electric cars: unexpected pollution

Indeed, windshield washer fluid is a necessary element for the operation of the car, whether it is in the cold or hot season. This makes it easier to wash the windows and keeps the windshield clear, providing good visibility on the road, which is an important safety feature. Windshield washer fluid consists primarily of water, but also contains dyes, ethylene glycol, and alcohol. It is these last components that attract the attention of researchers. The research focuses on impact of windshield washer fluid on the environment and has shown that spraying it releases significant amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) comparable to the amount of car exhaust! According to this study published by the ACS (American Chemical Society), scientists from the Universities of York and Manchester, United Kingdom, found that alcohols in windshield washer fluid are a major contributor to real-world vehicle emissions.

Windshield washer fluid in electric vehicles: a little-known factor in pollution

Indeed, the evaporation of ethanol and methanol releases volatile organic compounds in the atmosphere, and this is almost twice as much as all VOCs present in exhaust gases. For their study, the researchers installed sensors on the side of a busy road, but also in a quieter location, and then measured emissions of volatile organic compounds, calculating the average value per kilometer of the road. Alcohol rates significantly exceed other recorded data. It is possible that VOCs will be taken into account in future pollution control measures, while windshield washer fluid production may become more efficient by limiting the presence of substances that release environmentally harmful VOCs.
