Sergey Brin, who co-founded Google in 1998 with Larry Page, said in a rare public appearance that Google “clearly messed up” with the image processing feature of the Gemini chatbot (originally released under the name Bard).

On February 22, Google announced that it was shutting down its Gemini AI image generation feature due to “inaccurate” historical images. Some were offended by the images created by the artificial intelligence program, and in the last decade of February, a scandal erupted, with several Google executives issuing statements and apologies to calm the situation. The company plans to relaunch the image generation feature soon.

Sergey Brin said at the AGI House in Hillsboro, California that Google made a mistake by not sufficiently testing the Gemini image processing function. He acknowledged that many people were upset, and rightfully so.

Brin said it’s not clear why some of Gemini’s answers “lean” toward the political left, adding that it wasn’t Google’s intention.

Brin was chairman of the Alphabet group until 2019, but remains on the board and has also returned to work, spurred by the rapid development of AI.
