The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry said in Turkey that “the government in Chisinau, headed by citizens of Romania, is simply following in the footsteps of the regime in Kyiv, canceling everything that is Russian,” writes the Russian state agency TASS. He also stated that the Chisinau regime “wants to join the Republic of Moldova to Romania”, trying to block the “negotiation process” on the Transnistrian issue.
Lavrov made these statements at a diplomatic forum in Antalya.
“The regime established in Chisinau is simply following in the footsteps of the regime in Kyiv”
- “The restoration of the 5+2 negotiation format for the settlement of the Transnistrian problem will allow us to continue the search for mutually acceptable solutions, preserving the territorial integrity of Moldova, but the Romanian leadership in Chisinau is trying to destroy this instrument forever. .
- We appealed to the regime in Chisinau, led by Romanian citizens, who do not hide that they want to join the Republic of Moldova to Romania, so that this regime stops blocking the negotiation process,” said the Russian Foreign Minister, as quoted by the TASS news agency.
The head of Russian diplomacy also accused that “the Romanian leadership in Chisinau is trying to destroy this format once and for all”:
- “The regime established in Chisinau is simply following in the footsteps of the regime in Kyiv, canceling everything Russian, discriminating against the Russian language in all spheres and, together with the Ukrainians, creating even more serious economic pressure on Transnistria.”
Transnistria wants to be “sovereign”, accuses the Republic of Moldova of “genocide” and “begs” Moscow to come to its aid
Lavrov’s statements were made in the context of the fact that the congress, which met on Wednesday in Tiraspol, voted for a resolution in which he supports the thesis of the sovereignty of the region and asks Moscow for help in this regard, accusing the Republic of Moldova of “genocide”, it is said in publications. on the official telegram channels of the region, writes News.ro.
According to the resolution, the 7th congress decided to “appeal” to the two chambers of the Russian parliament – the Federation Council and the State Duma of Russia “with a request to take measures to protect Transnistria in the face of increased pressure from Moldova.” .
Tiraspol argues this with an appeal to Moscow, considering that more than 200,000 citizens of the Russian Federation live on the territory of Transnistria, as well as “taking into account Russia’s positive experience as a peacemaker on the Dniester and its status as a guarantor and mediator in the negotiation process.” in the Transnistrian problem”.
The unanimously adopted resolution does not specify how Russia will intervene to “help Transnistria”, but it is worth noting that it does not contain a request to join the Russian Federation. Moreover, the speeches of the officials who spoke at the congress focused more on emphasizing the independence of the region and would not discuss unification with the Russian Federation.
What exactly are the Transnistrian separatists demanding?
The official news agency of the Transnistrian regime published the main decisions that were taken at the 7th “Congress of People’s Elected Representatives of All Levels”:
- 1. To appeal to the Federation Council and the State Duma of Russia (the two chambers of the Russian Parliament – no) with a request to take measures to protect Transnistria in conditions of increased pressure from the Republic of Moldova. More than 220,000 Russian citizens live in Transnistria. Russia participates in the peacekeeping mission on Dniester and is a guarantor and mediator in the negotiation process.
- 2. To appeal to the UN Secretary General with a request to take into account the inalienable rights of the people of Transnistria, guaranteed by international norms, to prevent violations of the rights and freedoms of the citizens of Transnistria by the neighboring Republic of Moldova, and to prevent challenges that would lead to an escalation of tensions.
- 3. Address the participants of the international negotiation process in the “5+2” format (in which Russia, Ukraine and the OSCE are mediators, and the USA and the EU are not observers).
- 4. To appeal to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) with a request to influence the leadership of the Republic of Moldova in order to return to an adequate dialogue within the framework of the international negotiation process and ensure the conditions for a civilized resolution of the conflict.
- 5. To accept the call to the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS, the organization of former Soviet republics created around Russia – no) to prevent the escalation of the conflict on the Dniester.
- 6. Accept an appeal to the Parliament of the European Union with a request to make efforts to prevent pressure from Moldova and violation of the rights and freedoms of Transnistrians.
- 7. To accept an appeal to the International Committee of the Red Cross regarding the provision of conditions for ensuring the social and humanitarian rights, interests and inalienable freedoms of all residents of Transnistria.
The leader of Transnistria blames the Rep. Moldova “genocide”
In his speech at the congress, the head of the region, Vadym Krasnoselskyi, accused Chisinau of “genocide”. He named four forms of “genocide” against Transnistria that have taken place over the past 30 years: economic strangulation, physical destruction of a part of the people, denial of legal protection, and an attempt to impose language by force.
“Moldova traditionally uses global difficulties to harm Transnistria. It is true for the collapse of the Soviet Union at that time, it is true for the pandemic, it is true for the hostilities in Ukraine,” accused the Transnistrian leader Vadym Krasnoselskyi.
All the speakers, whose speeches were partially published in the official press of Tiraspol, including the president of the so-called “supreme council” (local parliament – no) Oleksandr Korshunov and the vice-president of the “council” Galina Antufeeva, focused on the alleged “humanitarian crisis” and problems , which the Transnistrian region has in import and export activities.
The so-called Minister of Foreign Affairs of Transnistria, Vitaly Ignatyev, called the pressure from Moldova on Transnistria unprecedented. He mentioned the “law on separatism” drafted by Chisinau and referred to alleged massive violations of the rights of Transnistrians.
“The Moldovan authorities understand that we have a different identity. Our task is to convey this truth to the world community,” said Vitaly Ignatyev, who is considered one of the most pro-Russian officials in Tiraspol.
“The Transnistrian identity is the basis for successfully weathering the geopolitical storm,” he said, citing a combination of “powerful” external factors — geopolitical instability, the “artificially induced” crisis of the 5+2 format, and unprecedented socio-economic pressure from under such conditions, unity and consolidation are more important than ever for the people and the Transnistrian “state”.
The so-called head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Transnistria declared about “preservation of sovereignty”
The head of the regional foreign policy department appealed to the delegates to support efforts to preserve the sovereignty of Transnistria and ensure peace and security through diplomatic means.
“Transnistria is a rather small territory with a population of half a million people. However, there are many states in the world that are smaller than ours. It is difficult to find such a state in the world, which would have such impeccable historical, legal and political grounds for its independence. But the international community has never tried to seriously focus on achieving a fair and peaceful settlement of the conflict,” he reproached.
The head of the Verkhovna Rada of the region, Oleksandr Korshunov, stated that the convened forum, the congresses of deputies of all levels, is a unique form of people’s representation, and the congresses were convened in the most difficult moments.
