The death toll in Gaza since the start of the war has exceeded 30,000, the health ministry of the Hamas-controlled exclave announced on Friday in a statement obtained by AFP and Agerpres.

As a result of Israeli strikes on Wednesday night, at least 79 people died. The United States and Qatar, the main mediators in the conflict between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas, hope to reach a truce that would allow the release of hostages from Gaza by March 11, when the Muslim fast of Ramadan begins.

The conflict, which followed Hamas’ unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7 last year, is by far the bloodiest of five conflicts between Israel and Palestinian Islamists since they seized control of Gaza in 2007.

Palestinian civilians suffered the most from the bombing throughout the affected area, where entire neighborhoods were destroyed. Of the 2.4 million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip, 1.7 million were forced to seek refuge.
