This Monday, February 26, the Geneva Motor Show returns to Switzerland for its 100th yearthousand editing, although in an easier and shorter way. After a four-year hiatus, largely due to the pandemic, this leading event in the automotive landscape is looking to re-establish itself in a changing world.
What was once the main spring event for motorists, this time will take place only in the city of three Palexpo halls in Genevacompared to the previous six during the last “classic” edition in 2019.
What novelties are expected at the Geneva Motor Show?
Only a few big brands will be there. Among them we find Renault and Dacia as the only European group represented, alongside Chinese giants and electromobility players such as BYD, MG-branded SAIC and the American Lucid. Most of the big manufacturers decided to skip this year, like the Volkswagen Group, BMW, Mercedes, as well as the Stellantis, Toyota or Hyundai-Kia groups. However, the Geneva Motor Show has traditionally been an arena for the presentation of numerous new products with a noticeable bias towards sports and luxury. Icons such as the Porsche 356 in 1949, the Jaguar E-Type in 1961 or even more recently the Alpine A110 all made their debut at the Swiss show.
The 2024 Geneva Motor Show will be marked by the long-awaited launch of the new R5 E-Tech, the electric version of the 1970s and 1980s icon, made in France and offered at a competitive price. “about 25,000 euros” depending on the brand. As for China, BYD will launch its Yangwang luxury brand in Europe with the majestic U8 luxury SUV. There will also be a presentation of the MG3 hybrid car, a direct competitor to the Toyota Yaris.

As a reminder, the Geneva Motor Show in March 2020 was canceled at the last minute due to the surge in Covid-19 cases. Since then, organizers have launched a new motor show in Qatar in October 2023, with a second edition planned for 2025. Alexandre de Senarklens, president of the show, expresses his delight at the return of the event: “It is important that the Geneva Motor Show once again becomes the main long-term platform where industry and the public meet”. Despite the fact that some manufacturers declined the invitation this year, Alexandre de Senarklens emphasizes the desire come back bigger and stronger every year.
Despite the forecast only 200,000 visitors this year, compared to 600,000 five years ago, the Geneva Motor Show remains optimistic about its future. The Swiss event is looking to update its concept despite growing dissatisfaction with traditional car shows.
