The British government announced on Saturday the allocation of 245 million pounds (about 287 million euros) to help Ukraine buy ammunition, while Prime Minister Rishi Sunak assured Kyiv that London would support him however necessary to win the war with Russia, and King Charles sent a message praising the “strength and determination” of Ukraine, reports AFP.
This new British aid, announced on the second anniversary of the start of Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine, is aimed at “reviving supply chains for the production of artillery munitions, which Ukraine urgently needs to increase its stockpile,” according to a British press release. Ministry of Defense, reports Agerpres.
Weakened by the blocking of American aid by the Republicans in the US Congress, the failure of the counteroffensive last summer and facing a crisis of soldiers and ammunition, the Ukrainian army faces an “extremely difficult” situation in the face of Russian forces that are on the offensive again, as testified by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky himself, who last week had to come to terms with the loss of the fortress city of Avdiyivka.
“On this ominous anniversary, we must renew our resolve,” British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said in a statement on Friday evening. “We are ready to do whatever, however much, until (Ukraine) wins,” he added.
King Charles III also sent a message on Saturday. “The determination and strength of the Ukrainian people continues to be a source of inspiration, while the unprovoked attack on their land, their lives and property enters its third tragic year,” said the British sovereign.
The British government, one of the main supporters of Ukraine in the war with Russia, recently announced an increase in military aid to Kyiv, which will amount to 2.5 billion pounds for the financial year 2024-2025.
