TAS rejected the appeal of the Russian Olympic Committee regarding the suspension of the IOC

The Supreme Court of Arbitration for Sport announced on Friday the rejection of an appeal filed by the Russian Olympic Committee following the suspension decision made by the IOC Executive Committee on October 12, 2023.

The IOC made this decision after the Russian Olympic Committee included several sports organizations from the Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine – Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, but subordinated to the Ukrainian Olympic Committee.

The IOC then declared that this was Russia’s violation of the Olympic Charter due to the violation of the territorial integrity of the Olympic Committee of Ukraine.

Russia, which invaded Ukraine in February 2022 in what Moscow called a “special operation”, condemned the move as politically motivated.

In its appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, the Olympic Committee of Russia asked to cancel the ban and to recognize it as a full-fledged National Olympic Committee with all the prerogatives that this status entails.

In a separate decision passed in December, the IOC clarified that Russians and Belarusians who qualify for the Olympics in Paris this summer will be able to compete as neutral athletes, without national flags, emblems and anthems.

Neutral athletes will only compete in individual sports at Paris 2024, and no teams from Russia or Belarus will be allowed, the IOC said, stressing that athletes who actively support the war in Ukraine are ineligible, as well as those under contract with the Russian army. or white
