Germany is the second-largest donor of military equipment to Ukraine, but Chancellor Olaf Scholz has resisted domestic pressure and some NATO partners to supply Taurus missiles, with the German leader fearing the supply could escalate the conflict.

Members of the European Parliament approved the project of the coalition led by the Social Democrats of Scholz, which provides for the supply of “additional systems and long-range ammunition” to Ukraine. But there is no direct reference in the draft law to the Taurus systems that Kyiv is requesting.

But the wording in the bill led some lawmakers to argue that deliveries of additional long-range systems could only mean deliveries of Taurus missiles.

In light of the confusion, the opposition Christian Democrats submitted a request that directly calls for the delivery of Taurus missiles, which would give Ukraine’s armed forces the ability to strike deeper into Russian-controlled territory.

The proposal was defeated, but Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, head of the Bundestag’s defense committee, was among those who voted for it.
