According to the latest figures published by the Association of European Manufacturers, EV market share fell to less than 11%, or 10.9%, in January after a peak of 18.5% in December 2023.

This decline is accompanied, however, by increase in sales of electric cars92,741 units were sold, which is 28.9% more than in the previous year.

Gasoline is still at the top, the hybrid is in ambush

However, this progress is not enough to maintain the market share of electric vehicles at the previous level. Mechanically, sales of diesel cars, although declining for several years, exceeded sales of electric cars in January, which is 13.4% of the market, despite a decrease of 4.9% compared to the previous year. According to Uwe Hochgeschurz, Stellantis’ commercial director in Europe, one of the reasons for this drop is Germany’s sudden cancellation of tax breaks for electric cars, which led to a sharp halt in orders. The same applies to France, except for the bonus for some mass models such as the Tesla Model 3 or the Dacia Spring.
Sales of hybrid cars also fell slightly, accounting for 28.8% of the market, while petrol cars maintained their dominant position at 35.2%. The European market as a whole remains at a low level, p 851,690 total salesup 12.1% from January 2023, which was already marked by difficulties related to electronic chip shortages and logistical problems.

Stellantis is doing better, Volkswagen and Renault are down slightly

On the manufacturer side, Stellantis recorded a significant increase in its market share to 19.1%, supported by the recovery of the Peugeot, Opel and Citroën brands. Volkswagen, the European leader, fell slightly to a 25.9% market share, while Renault-Dacia posted a 2.9% decline to a 10.1% market share.

The commercial director of Stellantis highlighted the return to normalcy in logistics and delivery times, which may have affected the company’s performance compared to its competitors during the previous year.
