The Ministry of Finance borrows from the population every month through the Tezaur program. In January of this year, we had inflation of 7.41%. To see if Romanians who invested in these government securities won or lost, we have to look at those that were launched in the second half of December 2022, that could be subscribed to in January 2023, as well as those that were launched in the second half of December 2022, which could be subscribed to in January 2023, and those launched in the second half of December 2022. last year.

If we look at the achieved inflation, it would mean that for 100 lei invested, to beat inflation, he would have to earn 7.41 lei.

Looking at 1-year bonds from December 2022 to January 2023, we see that we are talking about an increase of 7.65 lei. Thus, 11,580 Romanians who invested in these financial instruments exceeded inflation. On the other hand, if we look at Tezaur from the second half of 2023, the amount is lower, i.e. 7.35 lei per 100 lei invested (more than 15,000 Romanians chose these titles).

Of course, there are also 2- and 3-year bonds that beat inflation if we look at the interest paid this year. How will they fare next year? It remains to be seen.

For the 2-year offer from December 2022, the state offered 7.8% per annum, and for the 2- and 3-year offers from January 2023: 7.6%, respectively 8% per annum.

What interest rates does the Ministry of Finance offer in January 2024 to Romanians who want to borrow from the state

On January 15, the Ministry of Finance offers 1- and 3-year treasury bonds at rates of 6.1% and 7% per annum, respectively.

BNR estimates inflation at 3.7% for the first quarter of 2025. There is still a long way to go, many unknowns: for example, how much taxes will increase next year, after this year’s elections. Politicians will pay our bill for these years.

But let’s assume that BNR will fulfill this forecast (hard to believe). Thus, for every 1,000 lei invested, you should earn more than 37 lei to beat inflation.

Considering the mentioned interest rates from January 2024, it is clear that the amount is exceeded: 61 and 70 lei after 1 year. As for the other years of the 3-year offer, we will see at that time.

How much do banks offer for deposits for 1 year

According to the comparator Finzoom.ro, the best offers in banks for 1 year per 1,000 lei invested are 5.5-7.1% interest, and after paying income tax and commissions, the profit is 49.4-63.9 lei.

So, you can also beat inflation with bank deposits. It depends on which offer you choose. Don’t just look at the interest, but also the commission. There are cases of banks where interest is high, but commissions “eat up” a significant part of the profit.

Those who want to beat inflation, but with more risk, can look to the capital market, but they need to learn about it first, whether it is mutual funds or entering the market directly by buying stocks (or other financial tools). Be careful with scammers who appear on social networks: there is no winning or guarantee on the exchange.
