In a few days we will see the new Renault 5 E-Tech, a very important model for Renault… but also for Alpine. Indeed, Normandy drew on a small French electric car to develop its first 100% electric car, the Alpine A290. a model that will be presented in June 2024, the first official photos of which were published today.
Oddly enough, this is a camouflaged model immortalized in Sweden, at the center of the brand’s development, to test the car in severe frost, down to -30 degrees.
The first official information
The prototype is presented for the first time in its final body and confirms its dimensions, 3.99 meters long, 1.82 meters wide and 1.52 meters high, all with a 2.53 meter wheelbase. We’re obviously seeing more dynamic hardware overall, even if the general lines won’t be completely broken from the Renault 5 E-Tech that serves as the basis. Alpine has also presented part of the car’s interior with an exclusive sports steering wheel in Nappa leather, with a flat and mid-point. We find three key functions borrowed from the Alpine Formula 1 steering wheels: OV (overtaking), RCH (recharging) and direct access Drive modes.
“Our future sports city car A290 is currently being tested in the extreme and challenging conditions of Swedish Lapland. This important step aims to confirm the behavioral and dexterity instructions inherent in our low-adhesion DNA. In order to perfect its design and ensure its performance in all circumstances and in all weathers, the winter development phase of the A290 is crucial as it is a completely new model. All the criteria have been carefully studied by our engineering team and the results bode very well for its launch in the coming months.”said Philip Krief, boss of Alpine.
What is the power and autonomy of the Alpine A290?
In terms of battery and range, Alpine will build on Renault’s work around the electric R5. The A290 will have a new battery 52 kW/h with NMC elements (nickel-manganese-cobalt), enough to consider a range of about 400 kmsame as the R5 except the A290 will have a different “Battery System Management”.
Regarding the engine, information is still sparse, but one of them stands out more than the others. The Alpine A290 should benefit from the Renault Mégane E-Tech engine from 220 hpall on the front wheels.
It is also possible that a 280 hp version with four-wheel drive will be included.
