The long-term reliability of vehicles in the automotive industry has declined. And this time it’s not us saying it, but an analysis recently published by JD Power in the United States.

In this study, electric cars are significantly inferior to their counterparts with thermal engines, and the “sensitive” point is increased tire wear.

What do the numbers say?

To assess brand reliability, JD Power analyzed the top nine concerns reported by owners, including driver assistance features, driving experience, exterior, infotainment, interior, powertrain and seating. The study showed that owners of electric and hybrid vehicles experience significantly more problems than owners of internal combustion cars. On average, cars with thermal engines had 187 problems per 100 vehicles, while hybrid cars had 216, while electric vehicles had 256 problems per 100 vehicles over the three-year period.
However, it should be noted that these data have certain limitations. There’s information about tires and infotainment systems, but JD Power didn’t necessarily look at battery reliability, transmissions, range and performance. Therefore, some of this data should be taken with a grain of salt.

Tires deteriorate faster

39% of EV owners said they had to change tires at least once in the past 12 monthscompared to only 20% of thermal car owners. “There is cause for concern. Buyers of electric cars will save on fuel, but in return they will have to change tires more often. So that’s a question to think about.”, said Frank Hanley, JD Power’s senior director of automotive benchmarking. There are many reasons for increased tire degradation of electric cars, we have already talked about them in detail on “Auto Plus”.
First, electric vehicles require less maintenance due to fewer components and lower complexity of the transmission. This affects tires: if you don’t service an EV, you may not know the tire maintenance intervals. Bridgestone and other tire manufacturers, for example, have said that rotating tires periodically helps even out wear and increase tread life.
Also, electric cars are generally heavier than other cars because of the batteries. The electric motors’ instant torque, a standout feature, also results in more tire wear: the electric motors instantly send torque to each wheel with micro-adjustment to optimize traction at all times. There is no need to worry about the problem of tires, because their technology will evolve over time, and wear can be minimized by following simple rules.

For example, tire pressure can be checked regularly.
