“Oppenheimer,” a film about the creation of the atomic bomb during World War II, was the big winner at the BAFTA awards on Sunday, winning a total of seven awards, Reuters reported.
Prince William, president of the British Academy of Film and Arts, was the guest of honor at the ceremony. He arrived without wife Kate, who is recovering from abdominal surgery last month.
The ceremony included musical performances from ‘Ted Lasso’ star Hannah Weddingham and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who sang her 2001 hit ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’, which returned to the charts after appearing on ‘Saltburn’.
In her speech, Emma Thomas, the producer of “Oppenheimer”, thanked Christopher Nolan – her husband, who made the film. She said it was “annoying” but “he was always right”.
Oppenheimer received the most awards
Oppenheimer , one of the highest-grossing films of 2023, won the biggest award of the night, Best Picture. It also won awards for lead actor Cillian Murphy, supporting actor Robert Downey Jr., editing, cinematography, soundtrack and, last but not least, director Christopher Nolan, who won his first BAFTA.
“I have a lot of people to thank for this, an incredible cast … an incredible crew,” Nolan said in his acceptance speech.
The award for the leading female role went to Emma Stone for the comedy “Poor People”, which received a total of five awards.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph won Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Holdovers.
The drama “Anatomy of the Fall” won the award for the original screenplay.
Zone of Interest, about an Auschwitz commandant and his family living near the Nazi camp, won Outstanding British Film, Foreign Film and Sound.
