Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi spoke at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, asking Ukraine’s allies to increase security assistance in the context of a shortage of ammunition and the recent withdrawal from the city of Avdiyivka, Kyiv Independent reports.
Zelensky’s appearance at the conference comes at a crucial moment for Ukraine. The army was forced to withdraw from the heavily damaged city of Avdiyivka in the Donetsk region, as Russian troops tried to surround Ukrainian troops.
Meanwhile, the country faces a growing shortage of ammunition, and new aid to Ukraine remains deadlocked in the US Congress.
“Keeping Ukraine in conditions of an artificial shortage of weapons, particularly in artillery and long-range, allows (Russian President Volodymyr) Putin to adapt to the current intensity of the war,” he said in his speech.
Zelenskyi also commented on the withdrawal from Avdiyivka, noting that the goal is to “save the lives of our soldiers.”
Concluding his speech, Zelenskyi said: “Please don’t ask Ukraine when the war will end. Ask yourself why Putin can still keep this up.”
If “Ukraine is left alone, Russia will destroy us,” the president said during a public interview with Christian Amanpour on CNN after the speech.
Asked by Amanpour what he would say to the Republicans responsible for the current deadlock on US aid to Ukraine, Zelensky joked: “Is this on TV now? Then I won’t (say anything).”
He added that he planned to meet with US senators later in the day and reiterated his gratitude to the US for its support to date.
Zelensky was also asked about the possible return of former US President Donald Trump to the White House. According to him, Trump was invited to Ukraine.
“If Trump (comes) to Ukraine, I am ready to go to the front with him,” the Ukrainian leader said.
In January 2024, Zelensky said that Trump would be warmly welcomed in Kyiv on one condition: the former US president must demonstrate the ability to end the war with Russia within 24 hours, as he promised.
Trump has repeatedly said that his main goal in the war would be to secure a 24-hour ceasefire, but did not specify under what conditions that would potentially occur.
