Luca Bresel exited the Welsh Open snooker tournament in the quarter-finals, the reigning world champion losing to England’s Martin O’Donnell (ranked 76), 5-3.

The Belgian started the match better and led 3-2, but O’Donnell claimed the victory by winning three frames in a row.

It was the fourth meeting between Bresel and O’Donnell, with the Englishman winning each time: 4-1 at the 2018 Gibraltar Open, 5-3 at the 2018 China Championship, 4-2 at the 2023 Scottish Open and 5-3 at the 2024 Welsh Open.

Martin will battle for a place in the final against Elliot Slessor (ranked 50), who was beaten 5-3 by Wales’ Dominic Dale (ranked 49).

The other semi-final pits Gary Wilson (16th) against John Higgins (12th / beat Mark Allen 5-2).

The winners of the semi-finals will be determined by the system “best of 11 frames”, and the champion – by “best of 17 frames”.

The 2024 Welsh Open will take place from 12th to 18th February at Venue Cymru in Llandudno. The tournament has a total prize pool of £427,000 and the reigning champion is Robert Milkins (2023).
