House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner has released information about a “serious national security threat” to all members of Congress, the committee announced Wednesday, CNN reported.
While Turner and the White House remained tight-lipped about the nature of the threat, two sources and a US official told CNN it was linked to Russia. Several sources familiar with the information described it as “highly sensitive.”
One source who has seen the information confirmed that it is “a very disturbing and destabilizing Russian potential indeed,” which we recently reported on.
However, House Speaker Mike Johnson later tried to calm concerns about the unspecified threat, saying there was “no cause for alarm.”
“We just want to reassure everyone that we have the situation firmly under control,” Johnson said. “We are working on it and there is no anxiety.”
While Wednesday’s warning was vague, the U.S. has long been concerned about Russia’s military capabilities and its destabilizing influence in Europe and around the world as the war in Ukraine continues and the prospect of more U.S. aid to Kiev uncertain.
Turner also calls on President Joe Biden to declassify “all information regarding this threat.”
National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said he met privately to arrange a meeting with top lawmakers on the national security committees before Turner publicly warned of what he called a “serious threat to national security.”
