Mandatory new equipment: what are the terms? Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your inbox

In general, ten systems for security reasons will be mandatory. This new provision aims to significantly reduce the number of deaths on the roads of the European Union.

Another price increase?

This measure, let’s say, restrictive, will apply to all new cars from July 7, 2024. Of the ten systems, eight will be mandatory on that date. Essentially, two pedestrian protection systems will wait until 2026 be mandatory for new cars.
Manufacturers have already developed and offered (standard or optional) their driver assistance system on their car, such as automatic emergency braking or lane departure warning.
This equipment will be available from July 7 series for new cars. Will this lead, de facto, to price increase ? THE The European Parliament answers no, considering that these various technologies have been launched for several years. However, as might be expected, only the car manufacturers will have the final say on this matter. High-end models are mostly equipped with such technology, so they would be little affected by a possible price increase. On the other hand, we have more reserves of residents of the city and residents of the micro-city.

What technologies are mandatory from July 7, 2024?

Eight out of ten technologies will soon become mandatory. For starters, you have detection of drowsiness which uses sensors to analyze the driver’s behavior and warns him if he is no longer concentrating on driving. IS adaptive cruise control which adapts the vehicle’s speed to the traffic, it can, in particular, brake if the vehicle in front slows down. You have too reading signs which uses a camera to “read” road signs, including speed signs, to warn the driver of restrictions. Lane crossing warning, which, thanks to the camera, notifies the driver about deviations from the lane markings. IS automatic emergency braking which independently brakes the car if the driver does not react to an emergency situation.
Reversing warning will also be mandatory. Using ultrasonic sensors, this device monitors traffic behind the vehicle when the driver reverses. It can then trigger a warning or, in some cases, emergency braking. AND pre-equipped for a breathalyzer will also be mandatory. Although an immobilizer is not mandatory in cars, the European Union requires manufacturers to provide an interface that will allow it to be installed. Finally you have ” black box ยป built-in or EDR (route data recorder). The latter stores in memory dozens of driving parameters, such as speed and braking. It activates upon impact and records data that helps to understand the circumstances of the accident.

Mandatory technologies from July 7, 2026?

Therefore, these two last technologies will be mandatory in 2026 in new cars. First, you have detector of road users who are considered vulnerable. This is a more advanced version of automatic emergency braking. This system will detect around the car availability two wheels and cyclists and will stop the car if it notices a dangerous situation.
Finally you have it extended pedestrian protection zone. This device will directly affect the design of cars. It is planned to create an impact protection zone for the head of a cyclist or pedestrian to mitigate their injuries in the event of a collision. The cars will then have to adapt their bow design to meet the rules.
Given this long list of equipment that will now be mandatory, we wonder how manufacturers will not succumb to the temptation to significantly increase the prices of their cars in the European market.

Although the European Parliament estimated that the additional costs would be small. That seems unlikely…
