Russia launched a drone attack on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on Friday night, killing seven people, including three young children, causing fires and destroying homes and infrastructure, regional officials said on Saturday, Reuters reported.
Anger mixed with tears Monday among relatives of a Ukrainian family that lost three children burned alive in a Russian attack on Saturday in Kharkiv, a large city in the country’s northeast, AFP reported.
“Why did my little children die? Seven years, four years and ten months,” their grandmother Tetyana Putyatina told at the funeral, crying.
“I don’t know how I’m going to get through this,” she added. She also lost her son and husband on Saturday.
A couple and their three children died in a fire caused by a drone attack on a petrol station on Saturday.
The attack added fuel to the flames, creating a “river of fire” in the street and destroying about 15 homes, according to authorities.
“May all those who support this war (…) burn in the same flame that burned my grandchildren alive,” Tetyana Putiatina continued at the funeral.
“I will never forgive (Russia),” she said, although she was born on Russian soil.
In Kharkiv, several dozen people came to her funeral with bouquets of flowers and tears in their eyes.
Some brought teddy bears, which were placed on the chest.
The youngest of three children was buried in the same coffin as his mother.
“They had a good life,” Victoria Rakitina, the sister of the murdered father, said emotionally. “I can’t believe it at all.
On Saturday, the regional prosecutor’s office said that the family was “captured by fire in their own house.”
The mother, 35-year-old Olga Putyatina, worked in the regional prosecutor’s office, and was currently on maternity leave, the agency reported.
On Saturday evening, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi assured that “Russian terrorists” will be “brought to justice for their actions.”
“The perpetrators of such crimes should no longer go unpunished,” he insisted.
Kharkiv has come under regular attacks since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and has been the target of frequent Russian attacks in recent weeks.
In Kharkiv, the head of the local prosecutor’s office, Oleksandr Filchakov, said in a video posted on Telegram that three drones had shot down a gas station in the city’s Nemyshlian district.
“There was a large amount of fuel, which is why the consequences of the fire were so terrible,” said Filchakov.
