On Sunday, the US Senate took an important step toward passing a $95 billion aid package to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan that had been blocked in Congress for several months.
With 67 votes for this procedural vote, the Senate shows it has the necessary votes to further approve this financial package, which, however, will face stiff opposition from elected Republicans in the House of Representatives, France Presse and Agerpres said.
The date of the next vote in the Senate is still unknown.
“Ukraine is dangerously short of reserves. If America does not send aid to Ukraine with this national security bill, (Russian President Vladimir) Putin has every chance of success,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer warned before the vote.
Two years after the beginning of the Russian invasion, elected officials of the United States, Ukraine’s main military supporter, cannot agree on the approval of new funds.
Democrats overwhelmingly support it.
Republicans split into two camps, one is also pro-Ukrainian, and the other, close to Donald Trump, refuses any new support for Kyiv.
The financial package includes funds for Israel’s fight against Hamas (about $14 billion), as well as for Taiwan, a key US strategic ally.
The lion’s share (more than $60 billion) will help Ukraine rebuild its stockpile of ammunition, weapons and other necessities as the country enters its third year of war. Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
